Cantina Terlano Rarity Pinot Bianco 2010
This has to be the insiders’ wine, Italy’s answer to Grand Cru Burgundy from an Italian cooperative. I tasted it in London at a special vertical tasting of the Rarities with Rudi Kofler and Klaus Gasser. The Rarities are matured in large barrels, followed by a long ageing process of at least ten years on fine lees in small 2,500- litre steel tanks. No filtration, they are only bottled when they have reached the ideal balance and then they spend a year in bottle. It was a stunning tasting, and the 2010 stole my heart with its explosion of intense white flowers, complex layers of honey, straw, white pepper, juicy white stone fruit, minerals, and a streak of glorious acidity, so moreish. Pinot Bianco’s ability to age is a revelation, an extraordinary wine.
