▻ Bordeaux 2025: Part 2
In conversation with Jane Anson
Episode Summary:-
In our second podcast on Bordeaux 2025, Jane Anson and Sarah Kemp are halfway through their En Primeur tastings, with Jane having tasted over 500 wines and Sarah catching up with around 250. They both agree that it’s not an easy vintage to sum up. There are some really great wines, but it isn’t a homogeneous vintage. Yields overall are low, mostly in the 20hl/ha and the 30 hl/ha range, but a few are over 40, whilst at Château Cheval Blanc, it is down to 15hl/ha.
Jane discusses what is new this year. Firstly, there are more Medoc Blanc wines being shown at the En Primeur tastings. One château which will no longer have the word château on the label is Lafleur, their decision to irrigate means they no longer follow the rules of the Pomerol appellation; it will just be Lafleur on the label for 2025. At Pape Clement, they are taking a new direction with reducing their vineyards and are now concentrating on the original plots around the château.
Jane’s full report comes out on April 30th and will have her full database and analysis of the vintage. Wine Conversation listeners can subscribe with a special 15% discount by entering GEP2515 on her website www.janeanson.com.
Sarah reveals some of her favourite wines so far, Châteaux Margaux, Petrus, Haut-Bailly and Beauséjour, and declares if she finds a wine as brilliant as Château Margaux this year, she will eat her hat! Jane gives a shout-out to Domaine Matthieu Whaley in the Côtes de Bourg.
Watch out for our final Bordeaux 2025 next week when we will have completed our tastings, and will be delivering our final verdict.
