Episode Summary:-

Welcome to the first in our new series, “10 Minute Masterclass - with Jane Anson.” Jane is today’s leading Bordeaux expert, owner of www.janeanson.com and author of “Inside Bordeaux.” In our first masterclass, Sarah Kemp plunders Jane’s deep knowledge to discuss one of Bordeaux’s most loved appellations, Pomerol. Jane reveals that Pomerol is only 0.6% of Bordeaux’s surface area, and today has 140 producers. She talks about some of the famous names, including Petrus, (which was valued in 2018 at 1 billion euros) and reveals that a lot of the now famous names, which have been in existence since the 19th century, have only become so in the 20th, unlike many on the Left Bank.

The terroir is not homogenous, Jane says – there is sand, clay and gravel – but the gravel is underlaid by clay. Jane explains how most Pomerol wines age differently from the classified growths on the Left Bank, in that they can be drunk slightly earlier. She describes the flavours you should look out for: “Pomerol is all about pleasure… these are hedonistic wines.”  She also gives an inside tip on two new producers to look out for, Château Gombaude-Guillot and Château Guillot-Clauzel.

Sarah challenges Jane to let us know one little-known fact which will impress any wine lover at dinner. Pomerol is a red wine AOC, but Jane has discovered that Jean-Luc Thunevin, owner of Château Valandraud in Saint Emilion, has made a white wine in Pomerol, Clos du Beau-Père Blanc, which is sold as an AOC Bordeaux Blanc. This ten-minute deep dive into one of the world’s most famous regions is a brilliant way for anyone to be up-to-date and well-informed.

”One of the amazing things about Pomerol is a lot of the names, which are just so famous today, are relatively new.”
— Jane Anson
