Ipsus, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione  2018

It’s hard to believe that this is only the third vintage of Ipsus released by Giovanni Mazzei, whose family have been making wine in Tuscany for more than 600 years. The first vintage released was 2015; it was followed by the hugely impressive 2016, and now they have launched the 2018 (currently, the 2017 is being held back). This is a new modern classic, a truly beautiful fine wine which does come with a price tag attached. Ipsus comes from Il Caggio, a small estate that includes a vineyard of just over six hectares. Il Caggio was bought by the Marchesi Mazzei family in 2006; the majority of vines were planted in the 1990s, with a portion grafted over in 2008 with a series of high-quality Sangiovese clones; 4,200 bottles were made of the 2018 vintage. The wine has an intensely perfumed floral nose, and one senses the energy and vibrancy that awaits. On the palate, there is a core of red fruit, plums and dark cherries, which are revealed in concentric circles. The power is restrained and the depth of fruit is held firmly in place by silky tannins. Wave upon wave of forest fruit assaults the senses, and while impressive to drink now, it will be worth cellaring. The signature of Ipsus is clear, certainly one for the true collector. 14%
