▴ “Taste the Difference” Douro

Douro 2018, Sainsbury’s “Taste the Difference” Range

A lot of people don’t read the back label, probably because of the tendency of wineries to print catch-all food pairings, such as “ideal with chicken, pasta and salad.” However, it is worth checking because sometimes in the small type is a nugget of interesting information. Take Douro 2018, one of Sainsbury’s “Taste the Difference” range, where amongst the catch-all “concentrated wild berry fruit flavours, hints of vanilla and spice,” tasting notes is the fact that the wine is made by the renowned Symington Family Estates in Portugal’s Douro Valley. The Symingtons are the family behind Graham’s, Dow’s and Warre’s Port as well as Portugal’s cult classic wine, Chryseia, which is a joint venture with Bruno Prats, former proprietor of Ch Cos D’Estournel. The Douro 2018 punches well beyond its price point of £10.50 (25% off with purchases of six). Made from the traditional Douro varieties of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz, the wine is full of delicious bramble fruit layered with wild herbs.

The perfect winter supper wine. Price £10.50 Sainsbury’s.
