Occasionally, just occasionally, we stop talking about wine. It seems rude not to share some of the other random stuff we come across, as we know that Wine Conversationalist listeners and readers are a pretty discerning bunch.

Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil

When friends in the wine business come to dinner, they often bring olive oil, knowing a gift bottle will create the dilemma of whether it should be opened or not immediately.

Morgenster Wine and Olive Oil Estate, South Africa

I discovered Morgenster Extra Virgin Olive Oil at a tasting held by the brilliant Charles Carey who runs www.oilmerchant.co.uk. The oil comes from the Morgenster estate in the foothills of the Helderberg Mountains in the Western Cape, South Africa. It’s rich, complex, with notes of citrus fruit and bitter salad leaves, but what impresses most is the extraordinary long finish, just like in a top fine wine. Ideal gift, but only once you have bought a bottle for yourself first. £17.20 from www.oilmerchant.co.uk
